50+ years of circularity

Circularity has been Alufluor’s foundation for 50+ years. We safely recycle fluorides into energy-saving products, offering the most sustainable solutions to our customers. Since our founding in the 1970s, we have consistently worked to improve our sustainable processes by saving water, reducing GHG emissions, and by minimizing air and water exhaust.

These efforts are independently verified through our SIS/TS 2:202 self-declaration, according to the ISO 26000:2021.

We choose sustainability

Circularity is our foundation

Alufluor stands for circularity and sustainability and our mission is to repurpose fluorosilicic acid (FSA), a by-product of the fertiliser industry often discharged into the ocean. Instead, we utilize FSA to produce aluminium fluoride (AlF3), a key material in aluminium smelting.

Only 13% of global AlF3 production uses recycled fluorine, with most relying on mined fluorspar. In our process, FSA reacts with aluminium hydroxide to form AlF3, while silica is extracted and reused in fertiliser production, creating a closed-loop system.

Verified according to ISO 26000:2021

Our commitment to circularity and zero-solid waste forms the foundation for our operations. However, credibility must be demonstrated in a tangible way, it is not enough to simply make statements. An accredited third-party review provides that necessary verification.

Alufluor is verified by an accredited third party according to SS-EN ISO 26000:2021 by the self-declaration conducted according to SIS/TS 2:202, the international standard on social responsibility. This encourages us to remain competitive through credible, transparent, and responsible actions that align with international standards. Social responsibility is a cornerstone of sustainability, as it integrates ethical practices with environmental stewardship and economic resilience to support long-term sustainable development.

Global goals aligning with internal targets

Continuous improvement is part of who we are and this is also true for our sustainability efforts. In 2020 we aligned the company goals with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and we are estimating to reach net zero 2025!

Through a double materiality assessment, Alufluor has identified SDGs 7, 8, 12, 13, and 14 as the most relevant to our impact. We focus on increasing our positive contributions and reducing negative impacts, aiming to set the standard for a circular and sustainable industry.

Innovative recovery of energy and water  – the iWAYS project

In August 2024, we became the first of the three companies in the iWAYS project to commission the Heat Pipe Condensing Economiser (HPCE). This technology captures and reuses heat and fluorine that would otherwise be lost during our industrial processes, significantly enhancing energy efficiency and sustainability.

Within the scope of the iWAYS project, a major upgrade to our water treatment facility has also been implemented and tested, with the aim of being fully commissioned in 2025.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement N° 958274.

We care
