Alufluor is a global leader in the large-scale production of premium, low-bulk density aluminium fluoride. Our mission is to consistently deliver aluminium fluoride of the highest quality in a safe manner, with a strong commitment to sustainability. We are deeply committed to advancing our processes and technology, a focus that has shaped our history and continues to drive us today.
Our journey began in 1973 when Boliden Kemi AB built a phosphoric acid plant in Helsingborg, Sweden. They wanted to find a way to utilizse the resulting fluorosilicic acid, rather than neutralizing and disposing of it into the sea. The Swiss aluminium manufacturer Alusuisse, at the time having developed patents and pilot-scale technology for producing aluminium fluoride from fluorosilicic acid, was the ideal partner. This collaboration led to the founding of Alufluor: the first commercial plant to be built on this technology.
A history of circularity
Our journey began in 1973, when Boliden Kemi planned a phosphoric acid plant in Helsingborg with the goal of repurposing fluorosilicic acid (FSA) rather than neutralising it for sea disposal. Around the same time, AluSuisse had patented a method for converting FSA into aluminium fluoride (AIF3).
Recognising a shared opportunity for resource efficiency, the two companies joined forces and founded Alufluor.
Today, our work continues under joint venture ownership of Yara and Rio Tinto, and our dedication to innovation, quality, and sustainability remains as strong as ever
